Ingredients
Scale
- 6 large apples: Granny Smith or Honeycrisp work best for a mix of tart and sweet.
- 1/2 cup granulated sugar: To sweeten the fruit filling.
- 1 tablespoon ground cinnamon: For that classic warm spice flavor.
- 1 tablespoon lemon juice: To keep the apples bright and add a hint of acidity.
- 1 cup all-purpose flour: The base for our crunchy topping.
- 1 cup rolled oats: For added texture and a nutty flavor.
- 1 cup brown sugar: Packed, to give the topping a rich caramel taste.
- 1/2 cup cold unsalted butter: Cubed into small pieces to create the crumble.
- 1/2 teaspoon salt: To balance the sweetness of the dessert.
Instructions
- Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C) and lightly grease a 9×9 inch baking dish.
- Peel, core, and slice the apples into thin wedges. Place them in a large mixing bowl.
- Add the granulated sugar, 1/2 tablespoon of cinnamon, and lemon juice to the apples. Toss well until every slice is coated.
- Pour the apple mixture into the prepared baking dish and spread them out evenly.
- In another bowl, combine the flour, rolled oats, brown sugar, salt, and the remaining cinnamon.
- Add the cold, cubed butter to the flour mixture. Use your fingers or a pastry cutter to work the butter into the dry ingredients until the mixture looks like coarse crumbs.
- Sprinkle the crumble mixture evenly over the top of the apples.
- Bake for 40 to 45 minutes, or until the fruit is bubbling and the topping is golden brown and crisp.
- Remove from the oven and let it cool for at least 10 minutes before serving. This allows the juices to thicken.
- Cook Time: 55 minutes
