Ingredients
  

Dough Ingredients
  • 2 1/4 teaspoons active dry yeast
  • 1 cup warm water (about 110°F)
  • 2 teaspoons granulated sugar
  • 2 1/2 to 3 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 2 tablespoons olive oil
Topping Ingredients
  • 4 tablespoons unsalted butter, melted
  • 3 cloves garlic, finely minced
  • 2 tablespoons chopped fresh parsley
  • 2 tablespoons grated parmesan cheese (optional)
  • 1 pinch salt
  • to taste warm marinara sauce for dipping (optional)

Method
 

Preparation
  1. In a large bowl or stand mixer, mix the warm water, sugar, and yeast. Let it sit for 5–10 minutes until frothy.
  2. Add olive oil, salt, and 2 1/2 cups of flour. Mix until a dough forms, adding more flour as needed.
  3. Knead the dough for 8–10 minutes until it is smooth and elastic.
  4. Transfer the dough to an oiled bowl, cover it, and let it rise for 1 hour until it has doubled in size.
Shaping and Rising
  1. Punch down the dough and divide it into 12 pieces. Roll each piece into an 8-inch rope and tie it into a knot.
  2. Place the knots on a lined baking sheet. Cover and let them rise for 20–30 minutes.
Baking
  1. Preheat the oven to 400°F. Bake the knots for 12–15 minutes until they are golden.
Finishing Touch
  1. Melt the butter and stir in garlic, parsley, salt, and parmesan.
  2. Brush the warm knots with the garlic butter immediately after baking.
  3. Serve with warm marinara sauce, if desired.

Notes

Make sure the water for the yeast is warm, not hot, to avoid killing the yeast. Knead the dough well for soft and chewy knots. Feel free to add more herbs like oregano or basil for extra flavor. For a stronger garlic flavor, increase the minced garlic in the butter.
