Ingredients
  

For the filling
  • 4 cups fresh or frozen blackberries Make sure the blackberries are ripe for the best flavor.
  • 1/2 cup granulated sugar For mixing with blackberries.
  • 1 teaspoon lemon juice Optional, to enhance blackberry flavor.
For the batter
  • 1 cup granulated sugar Divided: 1/2 cup for berries, 1/2 cup for batter.
  • 1 cup all-purpose flour
  • 2 teaspoons baking powder
  • 1 pinch salt
  • 1 cup whole milk
  • 1/2 cup unsalted butter 1 stick, melted.

Method
 

Preparation
  1. Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C).
  2. Place the butter in a 9x13-inch baking dish and put it in the oven to melt while the oven preheats.
  3. In a bowl, mix the blackberries with 1/2 cup of sugar. Let them sit while you prepare the batter.
  4. In a separate bowl, whisk together the flour, remaining 1/2 cup of sugar, baking powder, and salt.
  5. Stir in the milk until the batter is smooth.
Baking
  1. Once the butter is melted, carefully remove the dish from the oven. Pour the batter evenly over the melted butter. Do not stir.
  2. Spoon the blackberries and their juices evenly over the batter. Again, do not stir.
  3. Bake for 40-45 minutes, until the top is golden brown and the filling is bubbly.
  4. Let it cool for at least 10 minutes before serving.

Notes

Serve warm, perhaps with a scoop of vanilla ice cream or a dollop of whipped cream. Store leftovers in an airtight container in the refrigerator for about 3 to 4 days. Reheat before serving. You can also experiment with other fruits like peaches or blueberries, or add some cinnamon or nutmeg for extra warmth.
